The 2023 “Shimabara Mirai Campus” has opened!

Shimabara Castle 400th Anniversary Project: Connecting to the Future! The ‘Shimabara Mirai Campus’ has commenced in fiscal year 5 of Reiwa.

Living in Shimabara and having the opportunity to welcome wonderful instructors every week amidst daily life, I once again feel how luxurious it is. This year, I deeply appreciate it.
Both the first and second sessions provided very interesting and valuable insights.

First Session: Envoys of the Feudal Lords and the Shimabara Rebellion – The Closed Future of Shimabara – [July 8th (Saturday)]

【Instructor】　
Mr. Masanori Takeda (Professor, Faculty of Modern Culture, Shokei University)
His main works include “Reading Historical Literature ‘The Tale of Hōgen’ in Modern Japanese” (published by Bensei Publishing) and “A Fundamental Study of Military Chronicles in the Late Medieval Period: Focusing on Chronicles Related to the Amakusa-Shimabara Rebellion”, and “A Fundamental Study of Envoy Literature: Focusing on the Sengoku Period and the Shimabara Rebellion”.

Second Session: The Shimabara Peninsula and the Shimazu Clan [July 15th (Saturday)]

Mr. Kazuhito Niina (Part-time Lecturer, Nankyu University)
A leading researcher in medieval Shimazu clan studies, focusing on the political history of southern Kyushu in the late medieval period. His major works include “Political Structure of the Shimazu Clan Territories in the Muromachi Period,” “Shimazu Takahisa: The Birth of the Sengoku Daimyo Shimazu Clan,” “The Kyushu Unification War of the Shimazu Brothers,” “The Indomitable Brothers: Shimazu Yoshihisa and Yoshihiro,” and “Modern Japanese Translation of the Diary of Kametaka Sōken.

The valuable sessions led by esteemed speakers continue with the third and fourth installments of this year’s Shimabara Mirai Campus. We encourage everyone to take this opportunity to participate.

The 3rd Session: “Dialogue between Matsukura Shigemasa and Father Navarro – As the Foundation of the Luzon Campaign Plan”Saturday, July 29th, 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM

[Instructor] Mioko Oka, Ph.D. (Associate Professor, University of Tokyo) Her main research focuses on depicting Japanese history from the Warring States period to the early Edo period based on original European documents related to Japan from the Jesuit order. She is also involved in historical education and manga supervision from the perspective of utilizing history for society. Her major works include ‘Merchants and Missionaries: The World of Nanban Trade’ and ‘Japanese Slaves in the Age of Exploration.

4th Session: The Kyushu Region during the Nanboku-cho Period, focusing on the Shimabara Peninsula.Saturday, August 5th, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

[Instructor] Shigeaki Mori, Ph.D. (Professor Emeritus, Fukuoka University) Born in Nagasaki Prefecture. Graduated from Shimabara Prefectural High School. A researcher of Japanese medieval history, specializing in the politics and culture of medieval Japan. Particularly knowledgeable about the Nanboku-cho period and the Muromachi period.

Finally, 2024 marks the 400th anniversary of the construction of Shimabara Castle. Let’s take this opportunity to learn about history and culture, and together, contemplate the future of Shimabara.
